Girls Go Global

Girls Go Global is a premier event empowering girls to change the world, through issues that affect youth in their own neighborhoods and all over the globe.

Healthier Horizons is the theme for 2009. Girls and adults who attend this event will have the opportunity to learn about many aspects of healthy lifestyles including healthy relationships, physical fitness and nutrition. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn about the challenges of girls’ health throughout the world and will discover what is being done to help make positive changes in the lives of girls everywhere.

We are encouraging all participants to Discover new things at Girls Go Global, Connect to make new friends and Take Action by bringing non-perishable items for the Domestic Violence Center for Women and Children.

  • Girls do not need to be registered Girl Scouts to attend.
  • Grant assistance may be requested by calling 800-798-0833.
  • Cookie Program Credit may be used.
  • Patches are available for $2.

TRANSPORTATION

Transportation will be offered to and from six locations for $10 per person. However, we reserve the right to cancel any location if a minimum is not met. Transportation registration deadline HAS BEEN EXTENDED - April 24.

Special Guests- Lisa Bluder -- Head Women's Basketball Coach, The University of Iowa and Olivia Myers -- Miss Iowa 2008

SALON I ROOM - TEEN LOUNGE- This room is designated for girls in grades 6-12.
  • (10:30-11:00) Drugs of Abuse - This is an interactive presentation about the dangers of abusing prescription drugs, over the counter medications, and the effects of mixing medications with alcohol. The presentation is given by Pharmacy students who belong to the University of Iowa Pharmacy Recovery Network organization (UIPRN).

  • (11:10-11:45) UI Gross Anatomy - UI Gross Anatomy is a great career exploration tool where students can learn about careers involved in science, medicine and health care. A 13-minute video highlights four remarkable procedures that The University of Iowa uses to treat patients on a regular basis. While watching the video, participants will be able to see and learn about various medical procedures. Medical students from the UI Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine will teach the session. Participants will be able to see and touch real human organs.

  • (1:55-2:10) Healthy Relationships - Presented by the U of I College of Nursing – Nursing Students from the university of iowa will present a short session on relationships – including what a healthy relationship is and why they are important. Girls will also learn how to recognize the signs of a dangerous relationship and what to do about them.

  • Leadership Training - Girls will have a blast at this highly interactive leadership training by Ted Coopwood from the EPA. Ted knows a lot about the environment, but he also knows a lot about teens and what skills they need to become leaders within their community. Girls will come away from this session feeling confident in being a leader at school, in extra curricular activities and in Girl Scouts!

  • Capri College Mini Makeovers – Girls will have an opportunity to learn skin care techniques appropriate for their skin type as well as learn about age appropriate makeup tips.

Salon II ROOM

  • (10:30-11:00) Cooperative Activities – The Stanley Foundation will be doing cooperative activities for girls ages 8-10. This session will help girls learn how to work together to get things done, and have fun doing it!

  • (12:45-1:15) Environmental Awareness- The Stanley Foundation presents a session about environmental awareness for girls ages 10-12. This session will help girls learn more about their surroundings and what they can do to make a difference in our world!

  • (1:25-1:55) Environmental Awareness- The Stanley Foundation presents a session about environmental awareness for girls ages 10-12. This session will help girls learn more about their surroundings and what they can do to make a difference in our world!

  • (2:05-2:35) Environmental Awareness- The Stanley Foundation presents a session about environmental awareness for girls ages 10-12. This session will help girls learn more about their surroundings and what they can do to make a difference in our world!

SALON III ROOM - University of Iowa Room

  • (10:30-11:00) Disaster Bingo: Get Your Kit Together - Learn how to stock your family’s disaster preparedness kit while playing the popular and familiar game of bingo. Presented by the University Hygienic Laboratory.

  • K-4 (11:15-11:45) Summertime Safety: Be Cool, Be Safe! Using props and their best acting skills, girls will participate in short and fun skits to learn about Summertime Safety. Take-home messages will be addressed on the topics of Sun Safety, Water Safety, The Importance of Hydrating, Stranger Danger, and Outdoor Activity Safety. Presented by the Safety Store of University of Iowa Children’s Hospital.

  • K-4 (12:45-1:15) Katy’s Kids - This is an educational program designed to teach young children about appropriate and responsible medication use. Pharmacy students and Katy the Kangaroo from The University of Iowa will stress the importance of poison prevention, and using prescription medications properly.

  • K-4 (1:25-1:55) Smile–We’re going to talk about pop! What exactly is soda pop? And, why does my Mom tell me to drink my milk instead? Presented by the UI College of Dentistry, this question and answer session will focus on healthy smiles and strong bones!

  • K-5 (2:05-2:35) Purple, Red, Stomp! How Easy Is That? Let’s get moving! This active and interactive session will focus on the importance of how eating a variety of fruits and vegetables and moving your body can help to prevent cancer. Presented by the Cancer Information Service of the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center at The University of Iowa.

  • (10:30-11:00) When Girls Hurt Girls™:  3 Effective Ways to Deal with Hurtful Friendships
    Female friendship experts Jane Balvanz and Blair Wagner of A Way Through, LLC will lead you through this interactive session.  They will give your girls the skills they need to work through hurtful friendships. You will learn:
    • What Relational Aggression is
    • Common Friendship Weapons™ girls use to hurt each other
    • 3 effective strategies for solving friendship problems

  • (10:30-11:45) Click It, Flip It - Rapping Our Way Towards a Healthier Environment - Girls will enjoy a fun filled time with Ted Coopwood who works for the Environmental Protection Agency to help engage young people in children’s environmental health protection. This is sure to be a fast paced and fun session as Ted will teach girls various raps he has written to interest kids in the environment and children’s health.   • K-5 (12:15-1:15) “I Got Caught!” – Iowa Health System presents this breakout session for girls in grades k-5 all about Bicycle and Helmet safety. Summer is right around the corner and girls will be out riding their bikes! Volunteers from Iowa Health Systems will teach girls about the proper ways to wear a helmet, as well as how to stay safe when riding a bike.
  • 4-12 (1:25-1:55) Think First Iowa! – Iowa Health System presents this breakout session for girls in grades 4 – 12. Think First Iowa educates people on the dangers of spinal cord injuries. These volunteers will teach girls how to prevent these life threatening injuries.
